“God of heaven and earth, the work of your hands is made known in your bountiful creation and in those who faithfully live their lives in your grace. Today we especially remember those we have mentioned trusting your promise of everlasting life and love. Be present with us this day as we mark their lives through the planting of this tree. May this tree speak the power of your life in our midst, deeply rooted and ever growing in all creation, through Jesus Christ. Amen.” —Kevin Kessler
“We ask for your blessing upon this tree, and upon us, that life might dwell and bear witness to the gift of all creation. Amen.”
The congregation of the Canton Church of the Brethren gathered outside during services on April 22 to remember and celebrate the lives of our loved ones lost during the past
year: Toni Zimmerman Thomas; Freeman Long; Annabelle Van Dyke; Gary Howarter; Mabel Bowman; Harley Davis; Freda Slack; Maxine McMillen; Wilda Brown; Caryl Dare; Martha Pearl Glaser; Elizabeth Champlin; and Sid Savill. The attendees were invited to share the names of others who have recently passed.
The tree was placed and planted as a joint effort of the entire congregation. Carol Davis wrote and assembled the tree-planting ceremony. Seed packets were distributed to everyone at the end of the ceremony.
